Restaurateur, Chef, Humanitarian

Chef Marilyn Schlossbach’s work ripples beyond the kitchen and into her community. She leverages her leadership, creativity, and values-driven ethic to advocate for social and environmental initiatives.

A passionate surfer, traveler, and matriarch, she brings her coastal sensibility to everything she creates. As much a connoisseur as a curator, ocean-consciousness informs her conservationist efforts, passion for community care, and culinary excellence.

She’s had the fortune to travel and experience the world on her surfboard. Her connection to the ocean enlivens her every entrepreneurial endeavor. Oshin Oil is the culmination of her commitment to a sustainable coastal lifestyle.

A natural beauty elixir, Oshin Oil is crafted with carefully sourced botanicals. It conjures the feeling of the open ocean and beautifies skin, hair, and soul like only a long day at the beach can.

It is equally healing to sun kissed skin and invigorating to the spirit that longs for the fresh salt air of summer.

Visit with her at Whitechapel Projects. A versatile venue that underscores the art in daily life through food, drink, performance, and events—all tied together by the artistic process. The space itself is a beacon of legacy and self-reinvention. The 120 year old Warehouse has been reimagined through adaptive reuse, an eco-friendly construction ethos.

Her New Jersey presence is a conduit for environmental and social justice. Marilyn’s community-driven work includes advocating for sustainable agriculture, accessible culinary and hospitality training, and dining destinations dedicated to flourishment of underserved communities.

She is a self-taught chef and author with a passion for the seaside and a commitment to nourishing her community through the culinary arts.

Marilyn’s focus is to explore all the gastronomic possibilities of local ingredients, combining the classic culinary wisdom from around the world with of-the-moment techniques. With boldness and vision, she transcends the boundaries of the kitchen as an active citizen, valuing the small producer, encouraging young professionals, and supporting her various local not-for-profit ventures.

When she is not in one of her successful venues or conducting the community outreach for which she is known, Marilyn spends time with her twin girls, Hari Mar and Rubi Dee, and artist husband Scott Szegeski, relishing life at the Jersey Shore and traveling for continued inspiration.

PROJECTS + PARTNERSHIPS

Marilyn's community work includes a collaboration with Interfaith Neighbors on Asbury Park’s Kula Urban Farm, organizing community gardening and surf lessons with the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County, and unwavering support of environmental organizations like Clean Ocean Action, Surfrider Foundation, the American Littoral Society and Waves For Water that work to protect coastlines and marine environments.  In addition, Marilyn is an executive board member of the New Jersey Restaurant and Hospitality Association and she sits on the board of the College Achieve Greater Asbury Park Charter School.

Marilyn is the founder of the not-for-profit Food For Thought By The Sea. The organization’s philanthropic endeavors are achieved through programs that foster healthy relationships and learning opportunities through culinary job placement and environmental studies. During COVID, Marilyn and her Food for Thought by the Sea network delivered 2,000+ meals weekly to local residents
